Problem

Summit BIM had been working with an outsourced programmer. Communication had been challenging and the coding practices weren’t up to speed. As the user base grew, there was a need to increase the sophistication of the platform. The current user interface was lean, with few resources, and an outdated design. Amongst other things, this made it challenging for non-technical users to extract and upload data.

Challenges

This is a complex, niche product. Understanding the domain, the needs of the various users, and how the system meets their specific needs was challenging. Further, this is a busy team. We needed to facilitate to the move to a better process without disrupting their workflows. There were many decisions that needed to be made during the project as the direction was solidified.

 

Within the platform itself, we needed to work collaboratively to clean up the database as well as moving through legacy programs, code, and processes.

Solution

We have developed targeted solutions for each of these problems. Firstly, we’ve supported them with guidance and helped improve the processes and codebase. We developed their data extraction module for trades contractors and upgraded their user interface. We also redesigned the user interface.

Design

We overhauled and upgraded the design for the internal system upgrades in line with brand image.

Functionality

The data extraction module now allows trades contractors to access information on serial numbers, specs, warranties, etc., for any property or space they are working in. The system runs effectively to store big data and generate custom manuals.
